There's good news in store for Delhi University (DU) students who face difficulties with the English language and have trouble preparing dissertations and reports. The Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) has finalised a proposal to start an English language proficiency course, with the help of the Department of English and the Central Institute of Education (CIE).
According to A K Bakhshi, director, ILLL and Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education (CPDHE), the course is designed for students who are brilliant at studies but find it difficult to make presentations, research papers and journals in English. "Many students from the science stream are unable to use language skills with ease in academic and social contexts and have poor English language skills," informed Bakhshi. He further added that DU receives students from various backgrounds and poor language skills act as a deterrent to their studies. "Participation in classroom activities becomes less and they eventually lose confidence in reading or writing. In fact many of the toppers are hesitant in making dissertations as they are not proficient in English," said Bakhshi. The course is designed both for undergraduate and postgraduate students and will be taught at five centres. "We will be starting the course at the south campus, initially, for business and economics students who have to make presentations that are often delivered at institutes abroad as well," added Bakhshi. The course is spread over a total of 100 hours and each class will be of two hours' duration. "We have taken support from the English Department and CIE to structure the course in a manner that ensures that the focus would remain on the academic aspect of English proficiency," said another official at ILLL. The fee for the course will be between Rs 500-1,000. "However, the fee for candidates from reserved categories would be lowered. Further, a certificate of teaching experience will also be awarded to teachers and senior students who conduct classes," added Bakhshi.
